FAQ: Automatic session sign-out

When a user is signed in to their Timebutler account, they are automatically signed out after a period of inactivity. This automatic session expiry is intentional and serves security purposes: it reduces the risk of third parties accessing the account while the employee is away from their desk, and greatly reduces the attack surface for external threats.

To avoid having to enter a username and password every time after a sign-out, the following options are available:

1) “Stay signed in” option

When signing in to Timebutler, you can enable the Stay signed in option. The system will then sign you in automatically in future without requiring your username and password.

Note: This automatic sign-in requires cookies to be allowed in your browser, at least for timebutler.de. Cookies must not be deleted automatically when the browser is closed.

2) Single Sign-On via third-party providers

Sign in to Timebutler and click Settings > Integration at the bottom left. Here you can link your user account with a third-party account. No personal data is transmitted to the third-party provider — only a technical link is established. Once activated, you can sign in to Timebutler with a single click, without entering a username and password.

Read here how to activate automatic sign-in.

3) Longer usage period for the virtual time clock

If time tracking and the virtual time clock are enabled in Timebutler, the virtual time clock can still be used even after the user account session has expired. No additional configuration is required: the virtual time clock has an inactivity timeout that spans an entire working day. An employee can sign in to Timebutler in the morning, start the virtual time clock, leave the browser open, and operate the virtual time clock at any point during the day without needing to sign in again.
