FAQ: Problems signing in with 2FA

Problems signing in with 2FA

If you have enabled Two-Factor Authentication (2FA), when signing in to your Timebutler user account you will be asked for the 2FA access code after entering your username and password. The 2FA access code is personal, remains valid for 30 seconds, and is then regenerated.

You can read the 2FA access code from the authenticator app you set up on your smartphone when you enabled 2FA in Timebutler.

2FA access code not accepted

If you correctly read the 2FA access code from the authenticator app and entered it in Timebutler, but still receive a message saying the code is incorrect, the following may be the cause:

  1. You accidentally entered the code incorrectly. Please try entering it again.

  2. For security reasons, each 2FA access code can only be used once and then becomes invalid. Did you recently use the code for a sign-in, or to enable or disable 2FA? Wait 30 seconds until the authenticator app displays a new code, then use the new code to sign in.

  3. If you have set up multiple 2FA codes in your authenticator app, you may have entered the code for a different application or a different Timebutler user account. Make sure you are using the 2FA access code for the correct application and the correct user account.

  4. Check whether the date and time on your smartphone are set correctly, and correct them if necessary. Then wait 30 seconds and sign in again using the newly generated code.

No access to the authenticator app

If you no longer have access to your smartphone or the authenticator app, you cannot enter the 2FA access code and will therefore be unable to sign in to your Timebutler user account. To regain access, have 2FA disabled by following these steps:

Go to the Timebutler sign-in page and sign in with your username and password. In the second step, you will be asked for the 2FA access code. On this page there is a Disable Two-Factor Authentication link. Click the link. Timebutler will then send an email to your manager asking whether your 2FA should be disabled.

Your manager opens the email and clicks the button to confirm that 2FA should be disabled. You will then receive a confirmation email informing you that 2FA has been disabled.

You can now sign in to your Timebutler user account using only your username and password, without being asked for the 2FA access code.

Let your manager know: Inform your manager that they will receive an email from Timebutler and should confirm the deactivation of 2FA. This ensures they do not mistake the request for an unwanted email or accidentally decline the deactivation.
