Forgot to stop the time clock

If an employee started the time clock at the start of work but forgets to stop it at the end of the workday, the following happens:

1. Automatic stop at midnight
At midnight, Timebutler checks whether the time clock is still running and sets the end time so that the employee’s individual target working time for that weekday is met. If a [break policy(/time-tracking/break-rules/set-up-break-policies/) is set for the employee, Timebutler adds the required minimum break to the time entry and pushes the end time accordingly.

Timebutler saves the time entry with the label “Stopped automatically.”

2. Notification to the employee
The employee receives an email from Timebutler with a note about the automatically stopped time entry and additional details, such as how the end time was calculated. The email contains a “Correct time entry” button that the user can click.

3. Correct the end time
After clicking the “Correct time entry” button in the email, the employee goes to the edit form for the time entry and can change the end time.

The [time tracking settings(/time-tracking/settings/time-tracking-settings/) define whether changes to the time entry apply immediately or require supervisor approval. If the change requires approval, Timebutler informs the supervisor by email, and they can approve or reject the change with a single click.

4. The label is removed
After the end time is changed, Timebutler also removes the “Stopped automatically” label. This ensures that only time entries are labeled that were stopped at midnight and have not yet been corrected by the employee. The supervisor and the employee can immediately see in Timebutler which entries still need revision.

No stop for night shifts
Timebutler does not stop the time clock if an admin has [activated night shifts(/frequently-asked-questions/time-tracking/time-clock-stop-at-midnight-night-shifts/) and the time clock started after 12:00 noon. This ensures that for an employee on a night shift who, for example, starts work at 9:00 PM, the time clock does not automatically stop at midnight.
